MEET THE ARISTOCRAT OF DOMESTICATED ANIMALS
History tells us that the alpaca has been domesticated for nearly 9000 years. The Quechua people of Peru are the traditional owners of alpacas. Their belief is that if all the alpacas and llamas were to die then they too would die. “We raise alpacas and llamas and they raise us,” is their explanation of the interdependency that has developed between humans and alpacas.
We too, in our short six years of being associated with alpacas, have come to learn about, love and respect these noble and dignified animals. Far from their natural habitat of the Altiplano at high altitudes of 15,000 feet above sea level, our alpacas in the Western Cape of South Africa have adapted well to local conditions.
